What is Blackjack?

Blackjack is the most-played casino card game in the world, and this vygam version brings the whole experience to your browser as a relaxed, play-money game — there is no real money involved and nothing to gamble. The goal is beautifully simple: build a hand whose value lands as close to 21 as possible without going over. You play one-on-one against an automated dealer. Every numbered card is worth its face value, the Jack, Queen and King are each worth ten, and the Ace is the game's clever wildcard — it counts as either one or eleven, whichever is kinder to your hand at that moment. Get closer to 21 than the dealer, or watch the dealer bust, and the round is yours.

Because you are playing for fun with chips rather than cash, you can experiment freely, learn the rhythm of the game, and chase a satisfying chip balance without any risk at all. The name "blackjack" comes from an old bonus once paid when a player's first two cards were the Ace of spades alongside a black jack; today the term simply refers to a two-card 21 — an Ace paired with any ten-value card — which is the strongest possible hand and pays a little extra. Deals here come from a multi-deck shoe that reshuffles on its own, just like a real table, so the mix of cards always feels fresh and unpredictable. Your chip balance is quietly saved in your browser between visits, so you can always pick up right where you left off.

How to Play

1Set your wager with the chip buttons, then press Deal. You and the dealer each receive two cards — but one of the dealer's cards stays face-down.
2Add up your hand. Number cards score their face value, tens and picture cards score 10, and each Ace is worth 1 or 11 — whichever keeps you safest.
3Choose Hit to draw another card or Stand to keep your total. Keep hitting as long as you stay at or under 21 — go over and you bust.
4When you Stand, the dealer flips the hidden card and draws until reaching at least 17. The hand nearest 21 without busting wins the round.

A round can only end one way for each hand — a win, a loss or a push. Keep these limits in mind, because a move is blocked or a hand is lost whenever:

  • your total goes over 21 — that is a bust, and you lose the round the instant it happens, even if the dealer would have busted afterwards;
  • you try to change your wager after the deal — the bet is locked in for the whole round;
  • you reach for Double Down after your opening two cards, or without enough chips to match your bet — it is only offered on the first two cards;
  • you try to draw again after you Stand — standing makes your hand final for that round;
  • you expect the Blackjack bonus from a 21 built with three or more cards — only a two-card 21 counts as a natural Blackjack.

Blackjack Tips & Strategy

Blackjack rewards steady, sensible decisions far more than luck. Card experts have distilled the maths of the game into a simplified plan called basic strategy — these beginner-friendly ideas capture the most useful parts and will win you more rounds without any memorising.

  1. Let the dealer's up-card guide you

    The single face-up dealer card tells you almost everything. When the dealer shows a 2 through 6 they are in a weak spot and must keep drawing, so they bust often — stand on modest totals like 12 to 16 and let them take the risk. When the dealer shows a 7, 8, 9, 10-value card or an Ace, they are strong, so you usually need to keep hitting until you reach at least 17 yourself.

  2. Always stand on a hard 17 or more

    A "hard" hand has no Ace being counted as eleven. Once your hard total reaches 17, the odds of improving without busting are poor — a single extra card sends you over the top far too frequently. Lock in the total, stand, and pass all of the pressure across the table to the dealer.

  3. Play your Aces smartly

    A "soft" hand contains an Ace worth eleven, so it can never bust on the very next card. That built-in safety net makes soft hands the perfect time to be brave — hitting a soft 16 or soft 17 costs you nothing if the draw is small, and it often turns a mediocre hand into a genuine winner instead.

  4. Double Down when the odds tip your way

    Doubling lets you double your bet in exchange for exactly one more card. It shines when your first two cards total 10 or 11 and the dealer shows a low up-card, because a single ten-value card then hands you a commanding 20 or 21. Since these are play-money chips, it is a risk-free way to practise spotting those moments.

Card Values, Hands & Payouts

Knowing exactly what each card is worth makes every decision clearer. The cards 2 through 10 are always worth their printed number, while the Jack, Queen and King are each worth ten. The Ace is the flexible one: it counts as eleven until that would push you past 21, at which point it quietly drops to one so your hand survives. That is why a hand like Ace-six is called a soft 17 — the Ace is still worth eleven — whereas Ace-six-King is a hard 17, because the Ace has already fallen to one to avoid a bust.

Payouts on vygam are straightforward, and they are settled entirely in virtual chips. A normal win pays even money, so a 25-chip bet returns your stake plus 25 chips. A two-card natural Blackjack is special and pays three-to-two, so the same 25-chip bet earns you a bonus on top. If your total and the dealer's total match, the round is a push and your wager comes straight back to you — nobody wins. After you stand, the dealer follows one fixed rule with no choices to make: draw to 17, then stop. In this game the dealer also stands on a soft 17, so once that total of 17 or more appears, the cards stop coming and the hands are compared.

FAQ

Is Blackjack free to play?

Yes — Blackjack on vygam is completely free and plays instantly in your browser. It is a casual, play-money card game with no download and no sign-up: you wager virtual chips only, never real money.

How do you win at Blackjack?

You win by finishing with a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer, without going over 21. If you go over you bust and lose, and if the dealer busts while you have not, you win. Equal totals are a push, which returns your bet.

Is this real-money gambling?

No. vygam Blackjack is purely for fun. You play with virtual chips that carry no cash value and cannot be bought, sold or cashed out. Nothing on the page involves real money, so it is simply a relaxed way to enjoy the classic 21 card game.

What is a soft hand in Blackjack?

A soft hand contains an Ace being counted as 11, such as an Ace and a six, which is a soft 17. Because the Ace can drop to 1, a soft hand can never bust on the next card, so you can hit it safely to try to improve.

When does the dealer stop drawing cards?

After you stand, the dealer reveals the hidden card and must keep drawing until the hand reaches 17 or more, then stands. In this game the dealer also stands on a soft 17, so once the total is 17 or higher no further cards are taken.
