On a 4×5 board sit ten wooden blocks of four sizes — one large 2×2 square, five rectangles, and four small singles — with only two empty cells of breathing room. The goal is singular: manoeuvre the big block from the top of the board to the exit at the bottom centre so it can slide free. The puzzle is best known in China as Huarong Dao (华容道), where the big block is the warlord Cao Cao fleeing through the Huarong Pass after the battle of Red Cliffs, blocked by the general Guan Yu (the horizontal bar) and four soldiers (the small squares) — a scene straight from the Three Kingdoms saga. The Western name comes from the Polish klocki, "little blocks". Whatever the name, the mechanics are identical, and this version keeps the traditional cast: a golden general to rescue, vertical officers, a stubborn horizontal Guan Yu, and four nimble soldiers who do most of the real work.

Follow the gaps, not the blocks
Only a block beside an empty cell can move, so the two gaps are the real pieces. Before touching anything, decide where the gaps must travel to let the general take its next step — then find the block moves that send them there.
Soldiers are your workforce
The four 1×1 blocks make almost all the flexible moves. Keep them mobile and avoid parking them in corners; a soldier trapped behind an officer is a soldier the endgame will miss.
Rotate the traffic, don't reverse it
Progress in Klotski flows in cycles: blocks circulate around the general rather than shuffling back and forth. When you find yourself undoing your last three moves, the cycle is broken — restart the pattern from the other side instead of grinding.
Learn the final descent
Every solution funnels into the same endgame: both gaps beneath the general, officers holding the flanks, and a straight walk down the centre. Practise the last ten moves from a nearly finished position until they are automatic — then the middlegame has a destination.
