Space Rocks

Rotate, thrust and fire to shatter the asteroids. Mind your momentum and don't crash — you have 3 lives.

Rotate with or A/D, thrust with or W, and fire with Space. On touch, use the buttons above. The game pauses when the tab loses focus.

What is Space Rocks?

Space Rocks is a retro vector-arcade shooter you play right in your browser. You command a small, wireframe spaceship adrift in the black of deep space, surrounded by tumbling asteroids that float in from every edge. Your ship rotates in place, thrusts forward on a jet of momentum, and fires a stream of bullets from its nose — but there is no ground beneath you and no brake to press, so every push of the throttle sends you gliding until you turn and burn the other way. The goal is beautifully simple: break every rock on the screen. Shoot a large asteroid and it splits into two medium chunks; shoot a medium chunk and it cracks into two small shards; hit a small shard and it is gone for good. Clear them all and a new, busier wave drifts in to test you again.

The game is a loving nod to the coin-op vector classics of the late 1970s, when a single glowing triangle and a field of jagged polygons could hold a whole arcade spellbound. Space Rocks keeps that pure, physics-driven tension — the weightless drift, the panic of a screen suddenly full of fast little fragments, the relief of a well-timed shot — and pairs it with clean line art, instant loading and no install of any kind. There is no story to sit through and no menu to grind past: you drop straight into the void, and each run is a self-contained sprint for a better number. It rewards a cool head and a light touch on the thrust far more than a mashing trigger finger, which is exactly what makes one "just one more wave" turn into a long, absorbing session.

How to Play

1Rotate your ship with the Arrow keys or A/D — on touch, use the on-screen Rotate buttons.
2Press Up or W (or tap THRUST) to accelerate in the direction your nose is pointing. You keep drifting after you let go.
3Press Space or tap FIRE to shoot. A large rock splits into two mediums, a medium into two smalls; a small rock is destroyed.
4Clear every rock to reach the next wave. You have 3 lives — a crash costs one.

The controls are quick to learn, and only a few things end a run. You lose a life, or the game ends, when:

  • your ship collides with any asteroid, large or small — the ship is destroyed and you lose one life;
  • you fly headlong into a rock you meant to dodge because your drift carried you further than expected;
  • your last life is gone — the game is over and your final score is locked in.

Space Rocks Tips & Strategy

Anyone can spin and shoot, but stringing together long, high-scoring runs takes a feel for momentum and a plan for the screen. These four habits will keep your ship intact and your score climbing wave after wave.

  1. Master momentum control

There is no brake in space, so your speed is whatever your last thrust made it. Fly in short, deliberate taps rather than holding the throttle down — a quick pulse nudges you into position, while a long burn leaves you rocketing across the screen with no easy way to stop. When you build up too much speed, rotate a full half-turn and give a counter-thrust to bleed it off. The best pilots spend most of the game drifting slowly, only firing the engine to reposition, so they are never carried into a rock they cannot see coming.

  2. Prioritise the split

Every large asteroid is really three fights in one: the big rock, the two mediums it becomes, and the four smalls those leave behind. If you scatter your shots across several big rocks at once, you will suddenly face a swarm of fast little shards flying in all directions. Instead, commit to one asteroid and finish its whole family before moving on — break the large, hunt down both mediums, then mop up the smalls. Smaller rocks are worth the most points anyway, so clearing a cluster completely both tidies the screen and pads your score.

  3. Use the screen wrap

Every object, including your ship, wraps around the edges: fly off the right side and you reappear on the left, drift off the top and you slide back in at the bottom. Treat that as a tool, not a trick. When a rock bears down on you, escaping through the nearest edge is often safer than trying to out-turn it, and you can line up a shot by letting a fragment wrap into your sights rather than chasing it across the whole field. Just remember the rocks wrap too, so an asteroid that vanishes off one edge is still very much in play.

  4. Play for survival

A run ends when your lives run out, so staying alive beats greedy shooting every time. Keep the ship near the middle of the screen where you have room to react in any direction, and avoid diving into a dense knot of rocks for one risky point. When the field gets crowded late in a wave, stop thrusting, pick a calm pocket of space, and shoot the nearest threats first. Clearing the wave patiently — even slowly — is always better than a fast, reckless push that ends with your ship in pieces.

How Momentum & Wrapping Work

Space Rocks runs on simple Newtonian flight, and understanding it turns a frustrating drift into a precise dance. Your thrust does not set your direction of travel directly — it adds a push in the direction your nose is pointing to whatever velocity you already have. That means you can fly forward while facing sideways, or slow down by facing backward and burning, exactly like a real ship coasting through a vacuum. A gentle drag bleeds a tiny amount of speed over time so you are never completely out of control, but the game will never stop you dead. Learning to think in terms of velocity rather than position is the single biggest leap most players make.

The playfield has no walls: it is a seamless torus where every edge connects to its opposite. Your ship, your bullets and every asteroid pass straight through the borders and reappear on the far side with their motion intact. This screen wrap is what keeps the action continuous — there is nowhere to get cornered, but there is also nowhere truly safe, because a rock you thought you dodged can loop around and surprise you. Scoring rewards finishing what you start: a large asteroid is worth the least, a medium a little more, and a small shard the most, so the points pile up as you break a rock all the way down. Your best score is saved in your browser, so every session gives you a personal number to chase and beat.

FAQ

Is Space Rocks free to play?

Yes — Space Rocks on vygam is completely free. There is no download and no sign-up; it plays instantly in your browser on phone, tablet or desktop.

How do you play Space Rocks?

Rotate your ship left and right, thrust forward to build momentum, and fire bullets to break the asteroids. A large rock splits into two medium rocks, a medium splits into two small rocks, and a small rock is destroyed outright. Clear every rock to advance to the next wave while avoiding collisions.

How do you get a high score in Space Rocks?

Smaller rocks are worth more points, so finishing the fragments a big asteroid leaves behind pays off. Control your drift with short thrust taps, pick off one rock cluster at a time so the screen never fills with fast little shards, and use screen wrap to escape danger and line up cleaner shots.

What happens when you shoot an asteroid in Space Rocks?

Shooting a large asteroid splits it into two medium asteroids that fly apart in new directions, and shooting a medium asteroid splits it into two small ones. Small asteroids do not split — a hit destroys them completely. Each hit adds to your score, with smaller rocks scoring the most.

Why does my ship keep drifting in Space Rocks?

Space Rocks uses momentum-based flight, just like a ship in a vacuum. Thrust adds speed in the direction you are facing, and there is no brake — you keep drifting until you turn around and thrust the other way. Learning to manage that drift is the core skill of the game.

Can I play Space Rocks on my phone?

Yes. Space Rocks is mobile-first and touch-friendly — on-screen Rotate, Thrust and Fire buttons appear under the game so you can fly with your thumbs. It works the same on desktop with the keyboard, and the game pauses automatically when the tab loses focus.
