What is Tower Defense?
Tower Defense is a classic strategy game where a steady stream of enemies marches along a fixed road toward an exit, and your only job is to stop them getting there. You cannot fight the enemies directly — instead you build towers on the grassy tiles beside the path, and each tower automatically aims at whatever it can reach and opens fire. Every enemy you destroy pays out gold, and that gold is the currency you spend on more towers, so a game of Tower Defense is really a running argument between your growing wall of firepower and an ever-larger, ever-tougher horde. Hold the line through the final wave and you win; let your lives drain to zero and the run is over.
The magic of the genre is that it turns a simple map into a rich puzzle. The path never changes, so before a single enemy appears you already know exactly where they will walk — which means the whole game is about anticipation. Where will your shots land on the most enemies for the longest time? Which corner forces them to loop back through the same tower's range twice? When do you save gold for one expensive Cannon versus flooding a chokepoint with cheap Arrows? Tower Defense rewards planning over reflexes: you set up your defenses in the calm between rounds, press Start Wave, and then watch your layout succeed or fail against a wave that gets faster, tougher and more numerous every time. It is quick to learn, endlessly re-playable, and just as satisfying on a phone during a coffee break as it is on a desktop when you are chasing a perfect run.
How to Play
The rules are short, and only a few things can go wrong. A build is blocked, or the game ends, when:
- you try to build on a path tile or on a tile that already has a tower — towers only go on empty ground beside the road;
- you try to build a tower you cannot afford — the placement is refused until you have enough gold;
- an enemy reaches the exit — you lose one life for each one that slips through;
- your lives hit zero — the game is over, no matter how many waves are left.
Tower Defense Tips & Strategy
Anyone can drop a few towers and hope, but consistently clearing every wave takes a plan. These four habits will keep your gold working hard and your exit sealed shut.
Build at corners and chokepoints
The single most important habit in Tower Defense is placing towers where enemies spend the most time inside their range. Straight sections whisk enemies past in a heartbeat, but a tight corner or a hairpin bend makes them crawl through the same patch of ground twice — first on the way in and again on the way out. A tower tucked into the inside of a U-turn can hit an enemy for far longer than one on an open stretch, effectively doubling its damage for free. Study the map before you build and claim those corner tiles first.
Mix tower types instead of spamming one
Each tower covers a weakness in the others. Arrows are cheap and fire fast, so they are your everyday damage, but they can be overwhelmed by a thick pack. That is where the Cannon shines: its splash damage hits a whole cluster at once, punishing enemies that bunch up on a corner. The Frost tower barely scratches anyone, yet by chilling and slowing everything it touches it hands every other tower extra shots on each target. A defense of pure Arrows stalls against tough waves; a blend of all three — Frost to slow, Cannon to soften the group, Arrows to finish — scales far better.
Concentrate fire before you spread out
When you have limited gold, it is tempting to sprinkle single towers evenly all the way down the road. Resist it. A cluster of towers overlapping on one strong corner acts like a single upgraded battery: everything that enters that kill-zone eats the combined firepower of the whole group, and enemies rarely survive the gauntlet. Spreading towers thin means each one lands only a shot or two before the enemy moves out of range, and tough enemies simply walk through the drizzle. Focus your early gold on making one bend truly deadly, then expand to a second kill-zone once your economy can support it.
Manage your economy
Gold is the real resource in Tower Defense, and how you spend it matters as much as where. Early waves are weak, so it can pay to build lean, kill everything fast, and pocket the wave-clear bonus to fund a big purchase — one Cannon on a great corner is often worth more than three scattered Arrows. But never coast: an enemy that reaches the exit costs you a life and pays you nothing, so falling behind on firepower snowballs quickly. Keep just enough towers up to kill the current wave cleanly, reinvest the surplus, and always have a plan for where the next tower goes before you press Start Wave.
How Waves, Gold & Towers Work
Every wave is a fixed group of enemies that spawns one at a time at the entrance and walks the same unchanging route to the exit. The number of enemies grows with each wave and so does their health, so a layout that shrugged off wave two can crumble at wave eight if you have not reinvested. Some enemies are faster and frailer runners that try to dash past your guns, while the rest are slower and much tougher — telling them apart at a glance is part of reading the board. You control the pace between rounds: nothing spawns until you press Start Wave, so there is always time to build, reposition your plan and top up your defenses before the next assault.
Gold ties the whole game together. You begin with a starting purse, earn a payout for every enemy your towers destroy, and collect a bonus each time you survive a wave. Towers never move once placed, so each purchase is a commitment — which is exactly why corners and chokepoints are so valuable. The three towers give you distinct tools: the Arrow tower is the fast, affordable workhorse; the Cannon trades fire rate for heavy splash damage that clears crowds; and the Frost tower slows enemies so your damage dealers get more shots per target. Balancing what you can afford against what the next wave demands, and turning kills back into firepower before the horde outgrows your defense, is the loop that makes Tower Defense so easy to start and so hard to put down.
FAQ
Is Tower Defense free to play?
Yes — Tower Defense on vygam is completely free. There is no download and no sign-up; it plays instantly in your browser on phone, tablet or desktop.
How do you play Tower Defense?
Enemies walk a fixed path from the entrance to the exit. You spend gold to place towers on the empty buildable tiles beside the path, and the towers automatically shoot the nearest enemy in range. Killing enemies earns more gold, and you press Start Wave to send in the next group. Let too many enemies reach the exit and you lose your lives; clear every wave to win.
What are the different tower types?
There are three towers. The Arrow tower is cheap and fires quickly at a single target, making it the reliable backbone of any defense. The Cannon is expensive and slow but hits hard and deals splash damage to a small area, so it shreds tightly packed groups. The Frost tower does light damage but chills every enemy it hits, slowing them down so your other towers get more shots in.
How do you earn gold in Tower Defense?
You start each game with a pile of gold and earn more every time one of your towers destroys an enemy. You also receive a bonus payout at the end of every wave you survive. That income is what you reinvest into new towers, so killing enemies quickly and completely is the engine that funds a stronger defense.
What is the best tower placement strategy?
Place towers at the corners and inside the tight bends of the path, where enemies spend the longest time inside your range and often double back within reach of a single tower. Clustering a few towers around one hairpin turn concentrates a huge amount of fire on one spot, which is usually stronger than spreading single towers evenly along a straight run.
Can I play Tower Defense on my phone?
Yes. Tower Defense is mobile-first and touch-friendly — tap a tower in the shop to select it, then tap an empty tile beside the path to build. The Start Wave button and the whole map are sized for a thumb, and it works exactly the same on desktop with a mouse.
