Fish Eat Fish — Grow to Ocean King
You are a small orange fish in a big, hungry sea. Eat every fish smaller than you, steer clear of every fish bigger than you, outswim the sharks — and grow, bite by bite, until the whole ocean answers to you.
Fish Eat Fish
Move your mouse or finger — your fish follows. Eat smaller fish, avoid bigger ones (red outline). Red arrows at the edges warn of big fish about to swim in.
Steer with the mouse, a finger, or WASD/arrows. Fish with a red outline are bigger than you. Chain bites within 1.5 s for combos up to ×5. The game pauses when the tab loses focus.
What is Fish Eat Fish?
Fish Eat Fish is the classic food-chain arcade game: you are a fish, the sea is full of other fish, and the only rule is size. Anything smaller than you is lunch; anything bigger than you is a threat. Every fish you eat makes you a little larger, which turns yesterday's predators into today's prey — the snapper that chased you a minute ago becomes a snack once you've grown past it. Fish swim in from both sides of the screen in every size, and about seven in ten of them are smaller than you at any moment, so there is always something to eat and always something to avoid.
As you grow, the sea fights back. Once you reach Perch size, sharks start hunting you, heading straight for your fish for a few seconds at a time. Bigger fish arriving from off-screen are flagged by red arrows at the edge, so you always get a moment's warning. Eat fast enough and your bites chain into combos that multiply your score; get hit and you lose one of three lives and a moment of safety to recover. Grow all the way to Ocean King for a crown and a thousand-point bonus — then keep feasting for as long as your lives hold out. It is the same simple loop that has made eat-and-grow games a staple for decades, drawn here with crisp, readable fish so you can always tell food from danger.
How to Play
The rules of the sea:
- you can only eat fish that are smaller than you — a fish your exact size is not food;
- a bigger fish touching you costs a life, even if you were chasing something else;
- a hit resets your combo back to zero;
- from Perch size, sharks hunt you every 15 seconds — they are slower than you, but not by much.
Fish Eat Fish Tips & Strategy
The difference between a short meal and a reign as Ocean King comes down to a few instincts that every good player develops.
Stay away from the edges
Every fish enters from the left or right edge of the sea, and a big fish can swim in right on top of you if you are hugging the wall. The middle of the screen gives you room to dodge in any direction and time to read the red edge warnings. Hunt near the edges only when no arrows are showing, then drift back toward the centre.
Chain bites for combos
A bite within 1.5 seconds of the last one raises your combo, up to ×5, and every point is multiplied. Small fish are worth little alone, but a school of them eaten in a quick string scores like one big catch. When you see a cluster of tiny fish, sweep through it in one smooth pass instead of picking them off one at a time.
Run sideways from sharks
Hunting sharks only chase for three and a half seconds and swim slower than you, so the escape is simple: keep moving, and move across their path rather than straight away from them. A straight retreat runs you into the wall; a sideways turn makes the shark overshoot. Once its hunt time runs out it gives up and swims off the screen.
Grow before you get greedy
Early on, the safest food is the smallest. Fish just under your size are worth more, but they also swim near fish just over your size, and a misjudged lunge is the most common way to lose a life. Bank steady growth on the easy fish first; every rank you climb turns a whole band of former threats into safe meals.
Sizes, Sharks and Scoring
Your fish starts small and grows by a fifth of the area of every fish it eats, so bigger meals grow you faster. Growth carries you through the size ranks shown in the scoreboard — Minnow, Guppy, Perch, Snapper and Barracuda — until you reach Ocean King, where growth stops. That cap is deliberate: it keeps the sea big enough to manoeuvre in, so the endgame is a score chase rather than a cramped tank. New fish are generated relative to your current size — about seven in ten smaller than you, the rest up to about one and two-thirds times bigger — so the food chain always has a step above and a step below you.
Each fish eaten scores points equal to its size, multiplied by your current combo, which climbs by one for each bite within 1.5 seconds of the last, up to ×5. Reaching Ocean King adds a one-time 1,000-point bonus. Being hit by a bigger fish costs one of your three lives, resets your combo and gives you two seconds of invulnerability, shown by your fish flashing. We tested the balance with automated players: active, careful swimmers reached Ocean King in most runs, while a fish that never moves is eaten long before it grows — so every crown is earned.
Fish Eat Fish vs Blob Arena
If you have played our Blob Arena, the core idea will be familiar — eat smaller, avoid bigger — but the two games play very differently. Blob Arena is a top-down arena where nine AI blobs actively hunt, chase and flee from each other and from you. Fish Eat Fish is a side-on sea where most fish simply swim across on their own business, so the challenge is reading the traffic: spotting gaps, timing your lunges and keeping out of the lanes where something big is coming. Only the sharks hunt you directly.
That makes Fish Eat Fish the more relaxed of the two in its early minutes and the more tactical later, when sharks and big swimmers fill the screen. It is also kinder to newcomers: three lives and a moment of invulnerability after each hit mean one mistake is never the end. If you enjoy it, try Snake for another classic grow-as-you-eat game, or Idle Fishing for a calmer trip to the same ocean.
FAQ
Is Fish Eat Fish free to play?
Yes — Fish Eat Fish on vygam is completely free. There is no download and no sign-up; it plays instantly in your browser on phone, tablet or desktop.
How do you play Fish Eat Fish?
Your orange fish swims toward your mouse pointer or finger, or you can steer with WASD or the arrow keys. Swim into any fish smaller than you to eat it and grow. Touching a fish bigger than you costs one of your three lives. Lose all three and the game is over; your score is the points you collected along the way.
How do I know which fish I can eat?
Size is everything: any fish even slightly smaller than you is food, and any fish bigger than you is dangerous. Bigger fish are drawn with a red outline so you can tell at a glance. About seven out of ten fish that appear are smaller than you, wherever you are in your growth.
What are the sharks?
Once your fish reaches Perch size, a hunting shark half again as big as you enters every 15 seconds and chases you for three and a half seconds before giving up and swimming off. Sharks are slower than you, so keep moving and don't get trapped against a wall.
How do combos and scoring work?
Each fish is worth points equal to its size. Eat another fish within 1.5 seconds of the last one and your combo rises — up to ×5 — multiplying the points for each bite. Getting hit resets the combo. Reaching Ocean King size is worth a 1,000-point bonus.
What happens after I become Ocean King?
You get the crown and the 1,000-point bonus, and the game carries on. Your fish stops growing at that size so the sea never becomes too cramped to play, but every bite still scores and combos still multiply, so the run becomes a score chase until your last life is gone. Your best score is saved in your browser.
