Play Space Colony Idle — Free
An idle colony with a life-support twist. Colonists are your best earners — but every colonist breathes. Keep the oxygen balance positive while you grow, or the whole crew downs tools and shelters until the air recovers. The colony keeps producing while you are away.
What is Space Colony Idle?
Space Colony Idle is a free idle game about keeping people alive on a rock that does not want them there. You land with a shovel and a half-full oxygen tank. Tapping the regolith field earns your first credits; credits buy solar farms, oxygen generators, habitats and — the heart of the game — colonists, who work the colony far harder than any machine and pay for themselves many times over.
The twist that separates it from other idle games is that your best earner is also your biggest cost. Machines produce and ask nothing back. Colonists produce five times as much — and breathe. Every recruit tilts your oxygen balance downward, and if the tank ever empties, the entire crew stops working and shelters until the air recovers. So the number that matters is not your credit total but the small green or red balance line under the oxygen tank. Idle games usually ask "what should I buy next?"; this one asks "what can the colony survive next?" — and that question keeps mattering at every scale from five colonists to five hundred.
How to Play
Nothing in the colony is ever lost permanently. A suffocated crew shelters rather than dies, and the moment generators refill the tank above zero everyone returns to work. The punishment for over-recruiting is stalled income, not a destroyed save — harsh enough to make the oxygen line matter, gentle enough that experimenting is always safe.
The Oxygen Equation
Everything in the colony reduces to one line of arithmetic: each oxygen generator adds +2.0 O₂ per second, and each colonist consumes −0.5 O₂ per second. The tank simply integrates that balance over time. Four colonists per generator is break-even; anything past that and the tank is a countdown clock.
Break-even, however, is not the target — it is the trap. A colony sitting at exactly zero balance survives, but it has no buffer: close the tab with the balance slightly negative and the offline calculator will dutifully drain your tank and idle your crew for hours. Experienced players keep the balance comfortably positive and treat the tank as insurance rather than a resource to spend. The game's whole difficulty curve is the temptation to recruit one more colonist than the air can carry — because each one earns so much that the red line always looks worth it.
Space Colony Tips & Strategy
The colony rewards planners over hoarders. These habits keep the air flowing and the credits compounding.
Recruit on a generator schedule
One oxygen generator supports four colonists. Adopt the rhythm early: generator first, then up to four recruits, then the next generator before anyone else boards. Colonies that recruit first and promise to fix the air later spend half their lives sheltering.
Solar farms are filler, not strategy
Solar income is safe but small. Buy panels with spare change while saving for something that matters, and never let them delay a generator or a habitat. A colony funded mainly by solar is a colony that has stopped growing.
Never close the tab in the red
The offline calculator honours your oxygen balance. Leave with the line green and the crew earns the full four hours; leave with it red and they work only until the tank empties, then machines limp along alone. Thirty seconds spent buying one generator before you leave can double an overnight haul.
Habitats before you need them
A habitat does nothing by itself, which makes it feel skippable — until a windfall arrives and your cap is full. Keeping one empty bunk ahead of your population means every burst of credits can turn into a colonist immediately instead of waiting out another purchase cycle.
Offline Earnings
The colony keeps working for up to four hours after you close the tab, and the offline maths plays by the same rules as the live game. If your oxygen balance was positive, colonists and machines earn their full rate for the whole absence. If it was negative, the simulation drains the tank at your real net rate, pays colonist income only for the minutes the air lasted, and lets the machines carry the remainder alone. The welcome-back note tells you exactly which of those happened.
The four-hour cap is deliberate, and it is the same choice made across vygam's other idle games — Bakery Tycoon and Mining Idle use it too. Without a cap, the best strategy in any idle game is to stop playing it; with one, checking in a few times a day comfortably beats abandoning the tab for a week, and the game stays a game.
FAQ
Is Space Colony Idle free to play?
Yes — Space Colony Idle on vygam is completely free. There is no download, no sign-up and no in-app purchase; the first scoop of regolith happens the moment the page loads.
How do you play Space Colony Idle?
Tap the regolith field to mine credits by hand, then spend them on solar farms, oxygen generators, habitats and colonists. Colonists earn far more than machines — but each one breathes, so you must keep building oxygen generators as the crew grows.
Why did my colonists stop working?
The oxygen ran out. When the tank hits zero, every colonist stops earning and shelters until the air recovers — nobody dies, but production from people drops to nothing. Build more oxygen generators or pause recruiting until the balance line turns positive again.
Does the colony keep earning when I close the tab?
Yes, for up to four hours, and the offline maths respects life support: if your oxygen balance was negative, the crew only earns until the tank runs dry and machines carry the rest. A colony left in surplus earns its full rate the whole time.
What does the habitat do?
Each habitat raises your colonist cap by five. Colonists are the strongest earners in the game, so habitats are how the colony scales — but every extra bunk tempts you to recruit past what your oxygen can support.
What is the best strategy?
Watch the oxygen balance line, not the credit counter. Recruit colonists only while the balance stays comfortably positive, add a generator before every second or third recruit, and treat solar farms as filler for spare change. A smaller crew that never suffocates out-earns a big crew that keeps sheltering.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. The colony is written to your browser's local storage every few seconds and again when you leave the page, so it is waiting for you next time on the same device. No account is needed.
